Bike to Work Wednesdays begins
May 13, 2015 at 12:32 am 0
The launch of Bike to Work Wednesdays was announced by BikeDenver and Downtown Denver Partnership. This initiative is designed to encourage folks to cycle to work every Wednesday for the next seven weeks. "Denver has rapidly become one of the nation's leading cities for bicycle commuting and we believe there is even greater opportunity to get more people to use the bicycle as a reliable form of transportation," said Molly North, executive director of BikeDenver.

This is the 2nd year of Bike to Work Wednesdays and program sponsor AAA Colorado will offer roadside assistance to folks who have registered for the program. "AAA has been promoting sharing the road and bike safety for many years," said Tony DeNovellis, CEO and President of AAA Colorado. "With our new bicycle roadside assistance we can give our members the security and peace of mind they've come to expect from AAA Colorado no matter what 'vehicle' they're using." Participants will be encouraged to log into BiketoWorkWednesdays.org to register their trips using Denver Regional Council of Government's new My Way to Go trip-tracking tool. The Denver Regional Council of Governments is also a partner in this program, so this is not exclusively a Denver program and cyclists from around the region are encouraged to participate. Any bike commuter who registers their trips will be eligible for free rewards from Noodles & Company including one free bowl for riding three Wednesdays and two free bowls for riding six Wednesdays.  Additionally, all participants will be eligible for weekly prize drawings. To support the program, Denver B-cycle will offer a $2 off discount for 24-hour access pass on each of the seven Bike to Work Wednesdays so anyone can participate even if they do not own a bicycle.  Go to Denver B-Cycle's Facebook Page to get the promo code Wednesday morning. This initiative ends on June 24th, which is Bike to Work Day.

Ridership numbers increase for Denver B-cycle
April 12, 2015 at 11:31 pm 0
Denver B-cycle released their 2014 report which highlights an increase in system use. Ridership and total miles ridden increased by 43 percent and membership in the bike sharing program rose by 29 percent in 2014. An estimated 803,498 miles were covered by B-cycle users in 2014, an increase of 243,074 miles over 2013. "The numbers in this report speak for themselves," said Denver B-cycle Executive Director Nick Bohnenkamp. "Greater system reliability, strong relationships with our partners, and a vibrant Denver are only a few of the factors that brought even more members into the system in 2014."

B-cycle is the Mile High City's bicycle sharing program. The system allows people to rent a bike for a small fee. Riders have the option of dropping off the rented bicycle at any b-cycle station. Annual passes are available and discounts for seniors, students and members of the armed forces are offered. "Looking forward, we have a couple new stations slated to be installed in 2015. However, we have come to realize that “growth” means more than new B-cycle stations. Growth means more riders, more trips, more B-cycles in the right places at the right times," stated Boenekamp. The City of Denver has worked to add more bike lanes to its streets in recent years. Denver has a plan in place to improve the streetscape of Brighton Boulevard which includes the addition of bike lanes to that corridor. B-cycle stations are located at the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Zoo and all other major cultural venues in town. Cycling helps to offset the negative impacts of automobile use such as carbon emissions, parking and traffic problems, and also helps to increase physical fitness.   Photo courtesy Urban Safari Photography

February 5, 2015 at 2:59 pm 0
A little more than 53 million people passed through Denver International Airport in 2014 setting an all-time record for the airport. This makes DIA the fifth busiest airport in the United States in 2014. DIA has been in operation since 1995. DIA served an all-time high of 191 destinations around the world during 2014, surpassing the 187 destinations served during 2013. New air service in 2014 included nonstop service to Panama City, Panama, as well as Guadalajara and Chihuahua, Mexico.

“Ending the year with record-breaking passenger traffic demonstrates the continued strength of the Denver market for air travel,” said Denver International Airport CEO Kim Day. “DIA has the third-largest domestic network for flights, and has seen sustained growth in international passenger traffic that has been bolstered by new service to destinations around the globe such as Tokyo and Panama City. We will continue to build on this momentum as we work to add new destinations, better customer amenities and services that ensures Denver International Airport’s place on the world map.” The airport sits 25 miles northeast of downtown Denver and a commuter rail line is currently under construction and is slated to begin operation in 2016. Rail trips are expected to whisk passengers from DIA to downtown Denver in 35 minutes with trains running every 15 minutes during peak hours. The nexus of the commuter rail project at the airport is a transit center and a 519-room Westin hotel with a 26,000 square foot conference center are currently under construction. The transit center will provide connecting bus service and a 82,000 square foot public plaza that will be used for entertainment and events. DIA was constructed with expansion in mind. The airport encompasses 53 square miles of land and the master plan indicates room for an additional six runways, space for new gates and another passenger terminal.
