The City of Denver will construct a new public recreation center that will be located at Colfax and Josephine on the northeast corner of the intersection. This development is slated to break ground this October with an expected completion in the summer of 2017. The most recent budget for the project is $33.1 million.
Currently the building is titled as the Central Denver Recreation Center, but there have been discussions to name the building after an individual who has contributed to the Denver community.
The site was most recently utilized as a public dog park. It is located directly to the west of Denver’s East High School and a block to the south of Denver’s City Park.
The facility will include:
- An 8-lane lap pool
- A leisure pool
- 2 basketball courts that can be used for volleyball
- Group exercise rooms
- Multipurpose rooms
- A running/walking track
- An outdoor climbing room
The most recent plan that the City of Denver presented on August 25th shows that a dog park will be installed on the property. The new dog park will be slightly smaller than the original.
The project has been designed to meet LEED Gold certification standards.

Justin, Do you know who the architect was on this project?
I believe initial architect work came from Sink Combs Dethlefs, final drawing from Barker Rinker Seacat. It’s going to be a great addition to Denver!
No Racquetball? This town is really in need of RB and handball courts. C’mon, Denver Rec!
