Downtown Denver Photos
December 11, 2016 at 9:54 pm 4
With some recent free time I have captured some photos in and around Downtown Denver on two separate urban hikes. I really enjoyed getting out and photographing Downtown Denver area since I did not have much free time to do so during the summer and fall. To begin, here is a series of photos captured from the Auraria Campus. The crane for 1144 Fifteenth Street is visible. When Looking closely, you can see a concrete boom just above the roofline of 1401 Lawrence that is in place to pour concrete for the elevator shaft of 1144 Fifteenth Street. It won't be long before 1144 Fifteenth Street makes a major impact on the Denver skyline. Leo Villareal’s LED light installation

ART hotel Denver

Arguably the most eye catching aspect of Denver's ART hotel that opened last week, is Leo Villareal's 22,000 LED bulb installation. The bulbs nearly stretch the entire block of 13th to 12th Avenue along Broadway. The lights are not static, but create an ever-changing luminous display. I filmed the installation and created the below video. I encourage you all to take a look at the display in person when you have the chance. Leo Villareal is also well known for his light installation on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

“The ART is reflective of Denver’s new role as the West’s epicenter for visionary thinking synergistically paired with distinctive and exceptionally effective actions,” says general manager David Bodette. “The ART contains a collection of modern and contemporary works and expressions of this very same passion, vitality and refusal by these world-class artists to succumb to the mundane. We are proud to represent a new direction for refined experiential living in a city that is re-expressing what it means to be truly alive in our age.”

Situated on the same block as the Denver Art Museum and directly across the street from History Colorado, the ART hotel will add 165 hotel rooms to downtown Denver. This project was designed by architect Guadalupe Cantu of Davis Partnership Architects, which happens to be the same firm that worked with Daniel Libeskind when he designed the Frederic C. Hamilton Building addition to the Denver Art Museum.

Works of art are displayed at every gathering place in the new hotel and selected works were curated by Dianne Vanderlip, former curator of modern and contemporary art at the Denver Art Museum. Fire Lounge & Terrace, a chef run restaurant at the ART, will also serve as an art gallery with original works on display. One of the unique features of the hotel is that each floor features selected works of art from an individual artist. Each hotel room on that corresponding floor  has prints of the artwork.

Inside look at the ART hotel

4th floor patio at ART hotel. This week Denver's ART hotel opened and Denver Urban Review was on hand to tour this new addition to the Mile High City. Lanny Martin, founder and managing director of Platte River Equity and a development parter involved in the ART hotel was on hand and addressed the crowd that was in attendance for the opening luncheon.  "Originally the plan was for this property to be a high-rise with residences in it. The economic downturn happened in 2008 and 2009 and laws in Colorado became tougher to build condos, so that project was put on hold. Bill Butler (founder of Corporex construction company) began talking to me about some ideas for the property, and Bill said how about a hotel?"

This morning it was announced that Honor Society Handcrafted Eatery will be opening its first restaurant at 1900 16th Street in Denver's Union Station Neighborhood. The space leased is 3,300 square feet and Honor Society is set to open this summer. The interior of the restaurant was designed by Colorado-based Rowland Broughton architecture firm. Rowland Broughton has offices in Denver and Aspen. Four partners have created this restaurant: Jonas Tempel, Rob Alvarado, Ian Smith and Justin Brunson. "Honor Society is based on the idea that great food has the power to unite people and provide a path to a healthier lifestyle," said Temple. "It's our humble belief that a productive life starts with your food and your food choices." The concept of the restaurant is to serve healthy, high-quality food in a fast casual setting. Honor society will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. "What excites me most about this project is the brand's higher purpose of improving lives," Alvarado said. "For our guests, we have the opportunity to positively affect eating habits by offering high-quality, healthful and craveable food and beverages at a great value. However, our reach will extend well beyond the four walls of the restaurant as we are committed to investing in improving the lives of our co-workers and communities."

1900 16th Street is a 17-story 400,000 square foot office building that stands near Denver's Millennium Bridge. The building was completed at the height of the recession in 2009. Today, 16,000 square feet of leasable office space is available. It currently stands as the tallest office building in the Central Platte Valley. CBRE has managed the leasing of this building. When 1900 16th Street opened it added 8,700 square feet of leasable ground floor retail space to Denver's Union Station neighborhood.

"Downtown Denver has over 35 million square feet of office space. 700,000 square feet of space was added in the past three years, and over 2.4 million square feet of space is under construction or planned for development. The direct vacancy rate fell to 9.7 percent in the past year, down from over 12 percent a few years ago," states the Downtown Denver Partnership. The report also stated that over 45,000 students attend institutions in downtown Denver and that commuting to downtown via cycling has increased 43 percent over the last year. “We are getting Downtown Denver ready for the next 20 to 30 years, while also focusing on real implementation needs,” said Brad Buchanan, executive director of Denver’s Department of Community Planning & Development. “A number of development projects and plans are underway, like the central rail extension and the Arapahoe Square rezoning process. The Downtown Denver Partnership partners closely with the Hancock administration to ensure we are moving these plans forward in a way that benefits our city.”
